This guide walks you through the normal setup flow: download the Ledger Wallet app, initialize the device, record your recovery phrase, verify it, and add accounts to manage your assets.

Step-by-step: setup in under 15 minutes

1. Unbox & check authenticity.

   Only use the official Ledger packaging and buy from Ledger’s official store or an authorized reseller. If packaging looks tampered, contact support before proceeding.

2. Download the Ledger Wallet app.

   Open your computer or phone and visit the official setup portal (ledger.com/start). Choose the version for your platform and install the Ledger Wallet companion app — it will guide the rest of the flow.

3. Connect and power on your device.

   Use the supplied USB cable. The app will detect your hardware and present three setup choices: initialize as a new device, restore from recovery phrase, or pair with an existing setup.

4. Create a PIN.

   Choose a PIN you can remember but others can’t guess. Use the device buttons to enter and confirm it. Never share the PIN — it is your first layer of protection.

5. Write down your recovery phrase.

   Your 24-word recovery phrase (seed) is the only backup for your wallet. Write it on paper, keep it offline, and store it in a safe place. Do not photograph it or store it on cloud services or email.

   Tip: consider a secure fireproof metal backup for long-term storage.
6. Verify the recovery phrase on the device.

   Follow the Ledger Wallet prompts to confirm a few words from your phrase. This ensures you recorded them correctly.

7. Add accounts and manage assets.

   Open Ledger Wallet, add the cryptocurrencies you want to manage (Bitcoin, Ethereum, tokens, and many more), and sync your device to view balances and send/receive transactions securely.
